About the event

To My Fellow Community Members,

As we have all been plunged into a deep darkness during these trying times it has also been a time of tremendous unity, prayer, and tzedakah for our communities. There are so many wonderful organizations and many of us are trying to support them all in this desperate time of need. I came across an idea with a cousin of mine in Israel and I would be so happy to invite you into this project with me.

There is a Yishuv (small settlement) in Israel called Yishuv Nechosha. In this community almost all the husbands and sons have gone away to fight for our country. This has left many mothers home alone with many children. It is an Israeli community and therefore, they don't have the same attention and funds that many American communities have. We thought it would be a beautiful idea to "adopt" this community for a small amount of time to help support the mothers and children of soldiers. For example, one mother has 4 out of 7 sons in the army. She doesn't sleep at night. Another mother is taking care of her and her sister's children by herself because her husband is in the army and her sister is very sick.

How do we "adopt" a community?

By showing that they are loved and supported all the way from America and that we are so appreciative of their sacrifice for Eretz Yisroel. We show this by providing them with some much-needed assistance. Pictures and videos of the community are included below.

What can we do physically for them?

First and foremost, we can sponsor dinner, household help, and therapeutic programs for the Yishuv. This takes a tremendous burden off the mothers. These are not wealthy women with housekeepers and help. They are managing a lot on their plates while facing very scary times. Included below is a list of different items you can sponsor.

We can also write cards to the wives, mothers and children as well as arrange programs and gifts for the children. These kids would feel so loved knowing that their brothers and sisters in America are thinking about them and they are not alone.

Count me in, what's the next step?

You can donate to the Yishuv through the Rabbi's charity/trust fund. These donations can be made online by clicking here and selecting "Trust Fund/Chesed Fund/Charity to the needy." Please include in the payment notes that your donation is for Yishuv Nechosha. Donations can also be made by check payable to "Fifth Avenue Synagogue Trust Fund."

We will also be hosting a challah bake on Nov. 16th and all proceeds will go to the Yishuv.

Furthermore, we will have a letter writing campaign to send messages of encouragement to the women and children that will be soon forthcoming.

Thank you for being a community that is filled with so much chessed, tzedaka, kindness and love.

From my heart to yours,

Lisa Babich
